OK, so I was over at hammockforums.net and watching Shug's videos of himself out backpacking and noticed he was using some kind of camera mount that worked in conjunction with his hiking poles. He could not only take self portraits but even videos. So, I asked him about what he was using and he referred me to:

This is a very clever device that screws into the tripod mount of your camera and then you slip it over the tip of your hiking pole. Set the timer for a self portrait, hold the stick out and snap your shot. This thing is very easy to use, doesn't cost a lot of money and weighs just a few grams. One of the reason I don't take too many pictures is the difficulty in setting up a shot with me in the picture. No more.
Check out their website and see for your self. Also be sure to watch Shug's videos, he is a riot!
