Trust me, NOBO on the AT, you aren't going to need to set up a hiking partner ahead of time. You will have PLENTY of opportunities to run in to people on the trail with like interests.

    Direction: SOBO
Estimated Start Date: First week of July 2009
    Approach Trail: yepper

Been planning to do this since 1999. Due to a life in the rat race it got put on the back Burner. I cannt wait till july. Still putting gear together. All my old ultra-light gear got lost in the shuffle..called divorce and a fire... things can always be replaced. A peace of mind and partial sanity go a long ways..........Hope to see some of you out there.!

I suppose going up the Abol slide counts for you detail oriented people.

The idea of heading up the slide on Day 1 isn't exactly my cup of tea. I came down the slide, but sure didn't go up it.

Isn't the whole approach trail thing about taking a different trail up instead of backtracking and tagging the sign. Abol trail mostly does that.

I have climbed Katahdin twice going up the Abol and down the Hunt. I would think it would be worse going down than heading up it.

Near springer there is a trail that leads up that is actually called the "approach trail".

Or you can skip it and be dropped off in the parking lot at the top.

Or so that is what everyone says, I haven't been there yet.

Default Chances favor the prepared mind

This is something I always expected I would do after I retired, but after being laid off and expecting the job market to be rough for the next 6-9 months I figure there is no better opportunity than now to do this.

    March 6-13th
Trail Name tbd, jagerbomb, or heck.. maybe just the unemployed engineer lol

I've been up the Abol Slide Trail. I'd sure rather go up it than come down it!

I moved to Damascus after my first hike, so that should tell you how much I like the trail. The most inportant thing I have learnd is go lite, I will never carry more than 25lbs again. I hope you all make it all the way.
