Seen plenty of pictures of folks sitting with their feet dangling over the edge. How much of a drop-off is it at the edge? (Please excuse the extra "f" , McAfee was meant.)

That's my dog, Echo. He's a fine young dog.
It's not a huge drop, but enough to be lethal, I think. Here's the view looking out. You can see some tree tops just a few dozen feet out.
View from the bench?

I think the picture he meant was two before the bench, 107 of 117.
It is a very nice bench.
Lots of very nice photos. I'll bet the memories are twice as good.
To get back to the original question, in that from McAfee you're looking DOWN on the tops of trees that are probably at least fifty feet high, I'd have to say the drop-off is a lot more than 10-12 feet. The fall might not kill you, but it'd sure ruin your day but good.
The photo in question is at this URL. It's labeled " FILE 109/117"

The bench was near Audie Murphy monument. Damn, but I'd love to see more of those on the AT.
not directly below where people are photographed. it's only 10-12 feet
You know what's funny -- that place you're talking about, where the rock juts out horizontally over empty space -- is what I mistook to be "Dragons Tooth." So here I was at Dragon's Tooth, looking for that famous view and not finding it. I was pissed!!! A couple days later, I was asking around about that, I was told that it was McAfee, and then I was even more pissed at having missed it....
My favorite photo. Well, not really. But funny.
The view OF McAfee Knob is better than the FROM McAfee Knob.
Elevation is 3,520.
The drop is around 20 to maybe 40ft but the ground rolls off from the base so it feels higher. It is a very nice view as is tinker cliffs across the way. Dragon's tooth is also quite lovely but requires some spunk to climb to the very top for the best view.
was never more happy to see a bench in my life than to see that one.the climb up to it was a mother. and then there it was. thank you.
You may hit the ground soon after falling off the edge, but then a 1000 foot tumble would ensue.
its not the fall that kills you. its the... well... ok, its the fall that kills you.
I did this section last week. The sign at the valley floor at the parking lot/trailhead says 2000 feet. The sign at McAfee Knob says 3,197 feet. I took this short video walking up to and looking down over the edge. (I have long arms)..

I was there yesterday and posted some photos on TJ [email protected] I'll post some photos to WB as soon as ui get a card reader. the drop from the rock would kill you.
