Thank you to all who jumped in on this identification. Now to look over the map and decide how much of this section to squeeze into five days definately planning an afternoon arrival and over night at West Mountain Shelter.

Absolutely not. Fingerboard has no view of the Hudson (or any other body of water.)

That is the shelter on West Mountain, Harriman State Park, N.Y.
In the background is the Hudson River.

    I wouldn't know; I have a ".2 mile rule". If a shelter is more than .2 off the trail I don't go.

I've heard others say that and never quite understood it. What's 0.2 if you've already done 15?

Um, 1.3%? Is that right? Do I get a prize?

I can't explain it, but having decided to walk, voluntarily, 2,175 miles, I was positively allergic to taking any extra steps.
    If not NOW, then WHEN?

I agree that it is a bit more off the trail than others but if the weather is good you get great views. I have some photos from the front of the shelter looking down on the Hudson and out to the NYC skyline that I posted. The town you look down on from here on the near bank is Haverstraw NY and the far bank is Ossining and I belive you may also be able to to see Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant. I belive that the fireplaces in this shelter are still active but the area gets a lot of use so its pretty picked over for squaw wood.

On a clear night you can see the lights of the New York City skyline. On other nights you'll be kept awake by the sounds of gun fire , which I assume, is from either West Point or Camp Smith.

That wasn't the question. Go pick on someone else.

This shelter may be in disrepair camped near there LY while on the Ramapo/Bear Mtn Trail and the floor had a hole in it (probably firewood) and the roof leaks but check with NY/NJ ATC as I am not positive.

Just for fun, looked it up. For comparison, here's Fingerboard. Bigger rocks, one chimney.

It's the view that gives it away -- and eliminates O'Brien and Fingerboard as contenders. O'Brien and Fingerboard are both right on the trail, pretty much. Neither one has much of a view. I walked past West Mtn. shelter 'cuz it's off a side trail, it was mid-day, and I was headed for Fingerboard that night. From my memory of that day's hike I can easily picture that gorgeous view from West Mtn. shelter. Sorry I missed it!
