It's opening in Charlotte today. Finally. The local newspaper gives it a good review.

Does this contest seem a little ironic to you? (I mean, that didn't stop me from entering it, of course.)

It would be a bit more in the spirit of the book and film if the winner had to shred their credit cards, burn their money and ID, and hitch out to Alaska.

Opening today (but only in one theatre) in Albany, NY
I would much rather be anywhere on a trail right now
than just sitting in front of some computer reading about it.

Do we have a pact, then?

    The winner takes the other?

And if you give me all your money, I will burn it for you. Promise.

Saw it with my old man the other night. I generally liked it, and it certainly makes me wanna re-read the book as it's been nearly 10 yrs since I last read it. I either forgot much of the backstory with his parents or Krakuer didn't stress it as much in the book.

Honestly I thought his journey out to Alaska was more entertaining from a movie perspective than the filming on the bus in Alaska. The movie kinda lost steam once he was out there.

The scenary was great, the movie ran too long, and I think overall it captured that freewheelin' spirit of being on the road or trail, that most of us have lived to an extent. That carefree, removed from society, not afraid to be different was captured well.

And lastly, Vedder did a decent job with the music. Some of the songs were great, while others didn't fit at all. Someone better suited in folk/bluegrass/country woulda beeen better than Mr. Pearl Jam

    The movie is great.

Its about far more than just some bad luck/decision making in the wild.

Like the book, it kind of took my breath away.

It's playing in Waterville for those in Central Maine who are wondering. I am going to see it this week.

Good point. It was quite obvious that the people that perpetuated that impression had never actually read the book.

Hey do any of you get the Independent Film Channel on cable?

They have that show, "Iconoclasts". The episode showing recently is one in which Sean Penn interviews Jonathan Krakauer (or perhaps, vice versa). They talk about the book, about McCandless, about the movie and how they viewed him. They travel to the actual bus where he died.

Excellent, excellent show. If you really want to get a picture of WHY Krakauer wrote the book, and why Penn made the movie, it's the definitive thing to see.

Just saw the movie last night and as rickb states..."it took my breath away"!
It just added more vivid pictures to the book which I've read 4 times.

Also as rickb stated it is far more than about "bad luck / decisions in the wild." The movie seemed to bring out more meaning inside my head than the book did.

Just makes me wonder: I would venture to say that all of us on WB has had those same feelings of travel as McCandless dreaming of travel and just walking away from it all.
I wonder how many non-outdoor people will see the movie and write it off as just poor parenting!...none of this would have happened if they had bought him a play station!!!!

Several reviews I read of the movie said it was too long and that Sean Penn worked the scenery as if he were making an ad for an SUV. I thought, OTOH, that that was the best part of the movie--that's what conveyed the feeling of being free and up high. Fantastic stuff.

I saw this movie after I watched a review by the actor that played McCanless, and Penn. I watched on the 19th at a local theatre that had just upgraded to Digital Sound. The soundtrack was awesome and the story was well told. It did take a while to lead up to the Alaska part but all the scenes were shot on location and the scenery was awesome. The character was kinda reckless, but he had the drive and determination of youth. He made a simple mistake that any of us could have made and it cost him. I enjoyed the film and would recommend seeing it in the theatre if possible. A home theatre would not do it justice, but I will purchase the dvd when it comes out.
