I just returned from re-hiking the Trail from Erwin to Kincora. I camped at Roan Mountain State Park. It is a great place but is 9 miles down route 143 from Carvers Gap. I almost stayed at Roan High Knob (where I stayed on my thru-hike this year). The park has great heated showers, flush toilets, 2 washers, 3 dryers. vending, ampitheatre, special tenting section and a huge swimming pool. I did not stop in the visitors center although it looked large from the outside. I would say it is a "resort like" campground.

Roan High Knob was fine (a little cold) but I thought I'd add this to the State Park discussion.

They do not take reservations so it may be easy to get into on Sunday in the summer.
