$20,000.00 including equipment.
Where are you staying? the Ritz Carlton? I guess you are planning on hiring a porter to carry all gear and also cook for you.
Come to think of it.. I don't have any idea how one could burn through 20 grand on an AT hike.
Anyone have any ideas how you could possibly spend 20 thou on a thru hike? this could be fun!!

I think 2 bucks a mile is a good estimate as long as you don't spend a lot of money on gear and hotels/motels along the way.
The more money you have, the more fun you will have.

Untrue. Do you really believe money buys happiness? A person who does work for stays and finds odd jobs along the way can have just as much, if not more fun, than the hiker with all the newest high tech gear and stays in the best hotels along the way. For the average hiker I'd say $5000 is more than enough to hike the trail and allows a little buffer in case of emergencies.
I spent total for equipment and food and bills back home $114,987.43 I like to live and live large plus I paid for 6 of my friends who I THOUGHT may have taken advantage a little.
If not NOW, then WHEN?

Its your money. Spend it as you wish. With all that disposable income however, I'm curious as to how much of it you use to help others who are truly in need and not just "friends" who want to mooch off you during a through hike.
He had a ton of bills at home.... house payment, car payment, credit cards... But I'm with Marta, I want to be your friend!
This is an impossible question to answer without knowing what your priorities are. I bought $100 bucks worth of new gear, and ate mostly generic rice, pasta, oatmeal and such on the trail. I stopped at most of the hostels on the way north but only stayed in motels/hotels two nights. I did eat well every five or six days, when I stopped in towns. And carried enough 100 proof booze to have 3 or 4 ounces most evenings.
I have no idea what the total came to for my six months and three days. I didn't keep a record. The biggest variable is food and motels. You can eat for 3 or 4 bucks a day, or 30-40 bucks a day. I figured on an average of six days between town stops, mostly because I wanted to maximize my time in the woods and mountains.
These days it seems most stop in towns every 2-3 days. Towns are money sinks.
