Smile Stupid question about the trail

I have spent all these years hiking and just now I want to know something about the trail. What is a stamp? Like in Whiteoak Stamp or Big Stamp Gap? I am guessing it is a flat area along the trail, but then again, I thought a col upm in NH was a cavernous area once.

I actually just saw a reference to this term while checking out a link posted by Teej a few days ago

    http://www.appalachiantrail.org/abou...e/ATN03May.pdf

This issue of the ATN has an AT terminology dictionary with a bunch of trail terms defined, including "Stamp" which IS a flat section of the trail Lots of other fun stuff in this issue. Check it out!!

    Peace,

    Default Stamp "Defined"

Few internet references but seems indirectly referred to as an unusual flat area amongst elevated areas, hence the term stamp, aka," footprint of the gods"

Stamp. Guess the ground was 'stamped' flat, hence the name. OK, how about that col term now?
