I remember sitting next to someone in middle school who didn't take a shower because of his religion. I very politely told my teacher in private that I can not sit next to him, he informed me it was his religion but rearranged the classroom seating the next day. I felt bad but wasn't making fun of the kid or anything.

I couldn't tell you but when I told my teacher about the smell he already knew and told me that it was his religion. Maybe it really wasn't and the teacher was just talking as nice as he could for him and his family. Maybe the teacher assumed it was his religion, all I know is that's what he said and I never questioned it until now. It was 6th or 7th grade, I think 6th.

A filthy hiker walked into a lunch-time crowd at a shelter somewhere in CT, bragging that he hadn't bathed for I forget how long. The guy was a sick, stinking mess. He also bragged about how long he'd been hiking with diarrhea. I started packing up my food, to get out of there as soon as I could. He had a few friends there who proceeded to shake his hand and hug him.

‘Embrace the stink?’…. not for me. In hot weather I have to shower/shampoo daily after setting up camp. Attracts less bug, keeps my clothing/gear cleaner, and most importantly - I just sleep much better when clean.

Learn/practice how to do an ‘astronaut’ shower/shampoo with Dr Bronners and <1L of water, so you only need to carry an extra 2lbs between last water source and camp. ~3grams for a spare ‘showerhead’ cap (Smartwater cap with 5 holes drilled in) paired with a dirty Sawyer bladder.

I also wear the same shirt/shorts for hiking, so will frequently soak/rinse them (away from water sources) for the evaporative cooling and to limit the funk build-up.

I hiked the JMT in a little less than 3 weeks without taking a "shower"... but every day I was giving myself a sponge bath to at least wash off sunscreen oils, and at least a full upper body sponge bath the two times I was near a sink.

“What’s wrong with smelling like a human?” Well ever since the Babylonians invented soap most folks have figured that out.

Always wondered why more hostels didn’t take the Rattle River (R.I.P.) approach of a “decon” shower before you could go in.

I don’t like cold water bathing; my on trail solve is to slap a little hand sanitizer in the pits and bits, and after that dries a little baby powder.

One thing is certain though... if you smell like a dirty human there isn't an animal out there interested in checking you out at night.

True and if you wrap your stinky hiker shirt around your food bag, it is safe......according to some on here, although I have never tried it personally.

These are odd things to brag about and considered as a 'positive' thing...especially together as a twofer. Nope, no thanks. I don't blame you one bit for getting out of there real fast!
