    Default Winter Thru-Hiker

Has anyone "tried" to Thur-hike the trail in Winter? I know it seems like a full hardy question but can it be done?

Apple Pie and Greenleaf were some of the more recent to try.

I have a relative that did it between Christmas and mid-June. But then his father taught him how to camp in GSMNP during the winter. So it takes special skill... compared to someone like me who is a bit more of the 3 season hiker.

There are definitely some early birds that trudge thru winter.

Always heard of stories of hikers taking refuge in the Newfound Gap restrooms during heavy snowfall in the Smokies.

Last year a hiker had to be rescued from GSMNP because of deep snow.

Jabba, the RealHikingViking, had some of the most beautiful pictures on his IG account. It was fun to watch his journey.

since winter is 89 days it would be safe to say no one will ever through hike in winter - permitting at baxter, making miles in the whites, closed access roads, might as well try to summit K2 for the effort + cost

Actually, on second read, I think the point "George" is making is that it probably hasn't been completed within the 89 days which are, I guess, meterological "Winter". I'm aware of folks hiking in the winter and doing a thru, but I don't think I've heard they did it in the 89 days. I can stand corrected if someone splits the hairs to point out a Thru-Hiker X, started on day 1 of "Winter" and finished their thru on the last day of "Winter".

I have hit parts of the AT in the winter, in Vermont one year. You have to really like snowshoeing, know how to stay dry and warm, love solitude, and be able to keep water in the liquid state. It's not for everybody, but it has it's rewards.
