Default Campsites and Water - NC Southbound Tanyard to I40

This is my first time posting, so I apologize if my questions have been answered elsewhere or if I'm in the wrong location.

I'm planning on a short multi-day hike in NC from Southbound from Tanyard (Hwy 25/70) to I40. In this section what are the rules for campsites (permits needed, shelter use, etc)?

And how easy is to find water sources near the trail? Are they well marked or is there another site or maps anyone recommends?

    Thank you!

No permits, first come first served for shelters. Water is reasonably available, suggest getting the FarOut Standing Bear to Damascus section for updates in that section.

Nice Section!! I do suggest buying the Farout App (formerly Guthook). You can buy the whole AT for @ $60 or you hike would be 2 sections in the south @ $20. It has up to date info on water sources, campsites and & bear warnings.
    Enjoy!!

    ATC guidebooks or Farout app.

As long as you are stopping at I40 and do not enter the Smokies, no permits for camping required.

Reasonably good water sources for majority. You might have a few dry spots on the ridgeline south of HS. Roaring Creek shelter no issue

Water sources will be on trail or blue blazed.

Be bear aware south of Hot Springs. Hang food away from camp.
