    Default "Glamping" gear

    Hey all,

Finally getting my husband to Big Bend National Park this winter IF we get a tent site tomorrow when it opens up. Our skoolie is too big for in the park and the RV spots outside are RIDICULOUSLY EXPENSIVE ($177/night+). So I figured we have room in the budget to really do some "glamping" by getting a big roomy tent and a very nice thick pad of some sort. He's 6'3" and we currently sleep on a queen sized mattress. Since we are not CARRYING any of this gear, weight is not an issue. Comfort is more important so we both get a good night's sleep so we can do lots of hiking during the day. Looking at December for BBNP. We will likely just use our blankets so we can snuggle. He's a great heat source! I've been to BBNP in December before so I'm not too worried about the temps getting too low.

So we want a really roomy tent, possibly so we can nearly stand up. Should we go free standing? 3 season? 4 season? And a thick, maybe foam pad (like the Hest Dually?).

    What are your recommendations?

(and to think my pack is at 20 lbs for 4 days of backpacking!)

It can get pretty cold in December in BBNP, so be prepared. See average high & low temperatures by month, and extremes, in the link below. I was there when there was an ice storm many years ago, but I don’t remember if it was December or January.

Our version of extravagance is bicycle touring. We bought a Tarptent Double Rainbow that allows us both to sit up at the same time and each have our own door. We take that on car camping trips now too. We both trust Tarptent products so we looked no further. My spouse sometimes brings an extra foam pad but I don't unless we expect to camp on snow.

Sounds like you just need a regular casual use tent like a Coleman or Kelty. I have the 2lb backpacking gear, but for car camping a 4 man Kelty that cost $100 new fills the bill.

I actually went one year when we had a "big freeze." It was about a week of nasty cold (and I'm from New England). I'm not too worried. But yes, I did look at the temps. I can handle 40s for sleeping especially with #theotherhalf to cuddle with!

only if they are battery operated. no electric in BBNP at the campgrounds.

I was fortunate last time in that I was there during a Super Moon so I didn't need my headlamp for night time bathroom runs.

couldn't get our reservations so we are going in February instead. If we end up with a really cold winter we can just cancel for a $10 fee. Weather should be similar to slightly better. Or it could be DAMN cold. Anyway, day time temps should be fine and it is a beautiful place to see.

The mattresses look like aa good idea. the beds, well he's 6'3" and 190lbs. I'm not sure they could take us "abusing" them.
