A thru hike with just a bivy and it could be yours. According to Dixies last video no one has ever thru hiked with just a bivy?
Interesting a tarp yes very view like Evan but not a bivy.

Very few like Evan oops
I think I remember Lumpy saying that he thru-hiked with a bivy. Could be wrong, others on here might know better.
Bivy versus shower curtain ?(Grandma Gatewood)
BTW I hauled a bivy for 3/4 of the trail but rarely if ever used it. I tended to hike off season and used shelters and hostels with some slackpacking

Its probably been done a couple times not everyone puts their accomplishments out for the world to know. Nothing like sleeping in a coffin for a couple months.
I hiked with a Marmot bivy way back in 1981.
In all reality my quarter dome is only 3' at the head and 2' at the feet and my sleep system always touches the sides. That's why I take my bigger tent for sections. I think the biggest difference would be head room. Not much wiggle room, and i wiggle alot when I sleep.
They're new and she shows a statistics graph showing the percentage of what type of shelter used .
I'm sorry you might not be familiar she's on Homemade wonderlust/ YouTube.
What did Earl Shaffer hike with?
Pretty sure Earl had a piece of canvas. I seem to remember in his book a mention of it getting charred by the fire. Not at all sure plastic sheeting was a thing in the 40's.
Yep sorry I don't know were I got plastic from according to Wikipedia he ditched his tent and slept in his poncho.
And to think of the high tech, light weight, big buck stuff we hike with nowadays. What hard mindsets Earl Shaffer and Grandma Gatewood had!
Are there any shelters named after them?
Well most y'all probably already know this but Shaffer asked that the shelter be taken down in 1983 because he felt it got to fancy with the new wooden floors. So it was disassembled in 2008 and now resides in AT museum at pine Grove forest
SMD has had a Gatewood Cape for many years.
Earl Shaffer did have the other type of shelter named after him
