Default That time of year Black Flies are out in the Whites

No doubt they will be out along the AT in Maine real quick. Time for the bug net and DEET.

They normally show up by Mother's Day and are clearing out by Father's Day, but tend to move up in elevation late in the season.

The only good thing about them for fisherman is black flies are trout food. They tend to breed in only very clean water.

Thanks peakbagger! I've been lucky to avoid the worst of them all the times I've visited.

Already? Here in Vermont, I was out on the trail Sunday and they weren't an issue. But it was somewhat cool. This week is seeing sunshine and temps in 70s.
