    Default New York night sounds

Hiking New York up to Connecticut on the AT at night I heard a strange sound on two nights that I didn’t recognize but thought it might have been some type of bird. I researched bird/owl sounds but didn’t hear anything close. I also checked animals common to the area, no luck. I have no idea what it could have been. I tried recording but after two outcries, it didn’t repeat.

    Probably those Graymoor monks.

If it was a shriek or screaming kind of noise like someone in trouble, it could have been an owl. Barn owls, Barking owls, Screech owls, and Great Horned owls can make some loud and nearly human-like calls. First time I ever heard one I would have sworn it was a woman screaming in terror, very unsettling even after I learned what it was.

A red fox can make sounds like a person screaming.
We need a description of the sound to narrow down what it might have been.

I had that happen to me in the winter in Harriman State Park a few years ago. Seriously creeped me out.

After listening to as many various sound files as I could, red fox was the closest to what I heard... almost exact, in fact. I thought a woman was being murdered right there in the woods, and it took all the logic and rationality I could muster to convince myself it was an animal sound.

Or someone being murdered by a Garymoor monk…
