Something definitely got lost in translation...
In a press release, the Forest Service says hikers are encouraged to bring their own personal tent to set up in shelters provided along the trail in Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina and Virginia.

Was I not supposed to use them during all my hikes going back to last April? Shame on me.

The quote from the NFS is disappointing....

"In a press release, the Forest Service says hikers are encouraged to bring their own personal tent to set up in shelters provided along the trail in Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina and Virginia."

I mentioned that above. Would have been nice if they'd linked the NFS statement to see if it was misunderstood or just... bad.

    “Available for lodging”

I just have to chuckle as I imagine people who’ve never seen an AT shelter imagine some quaint cabin, get into their SUV to head to one near a road crossing, and then arriving at a typical AT shelter!

Yea, I'm not convinced the USFS actually said that. Prob what the reporter heard.

"Available for lodging" is classic. Sounds like a good book title.

I recall at a business conference overhearing some well-dressed ladies discussing going to Taft Lodge for the night. They could have been hikers, but I couldn't just leave it alone. I told them it was a several-mile hike, and the "Lodge" was a log cabin with bunks for 20 smelly hikers, no running water, no food, and no toilets.

They weren't hikers and they and their high heels were very thankful for the info!

No doubt it was suppose to say "set up tents near the shelter"

Yes, this one is much better, but I fear the damage done by the other.

You can bet some clown will have the original quote in their pocket and set up their tent in shelters just ahead of you on the trail continually.

You’re assuming they know how to read.
