    I'm guessing he's trying to connect already established trails where possible?

    Apparently, he was trying to avoid populated trails like the AT on his hike during the pandemic. So, if the route pictured is what he actually walked or planned on walking, that might also be a reason.
    I'm not lost. I'm exploring.
