Default Camping/Water Source at Deep Gap (Unaka)

Looking for information about camp sites and the water source at Deep Gap, between Unaka and Beauty Spot. Is Deep Gap sign-posted (or otherwise obvious)? What's the water source there?

Obvious at the dirt road crossing. When you come off of Unaka, cross the road and it is right there. Flow is year round even when it is dry. No water on top of Unaka, it is however an awesome place to tent or hang.

There's a water source about 2 miles from the top of Unaka; if you're headed northbound, it'll be off to your left (where the trail goes alongside Unaka Mountain Road). It's blue-blazed. As Mr. Bumpy rightly pointed out, there's no water atop the mountain but, gosh, it's a gorgeous place to camp (treat the area kindly).

Thanks. We'll be hiking south, if weather good will water up before top of Unaka and camp up there. If weather bad we'll head to Deep Gap. Decent camping spots at Deep Gap?

Earl Shaffer's "Walking with Spring," about his 1948 thru-hike, has a photo he took at the top of Unaka Mountain. It is utterly impossible to reconcile that photo with the mountaintop's appearance today.

Yeah there are several places to camp around there. None as gorgeous as the top of Unaka, though...

Yeah, there was either a major fire or maybe major logging on Unaka, in the 1920s I think. So by the time Shaffer saw it it wasn't recovered.
