FWIW - I've used an Osprey "Daylite" pack for day hikes for several years now and love it. It holds gear for any of the seasons I am out in, holds a 3-liter water bladder away from gear in the pack, and can be overloaded a little if needed. The pack itself is very light, the chassis supports weight well and easily adjusted with the shoulder straps, and the hip straps tend to work well in keeping pack weight off the shoulders and on the hips where it belongs. The price tag is a reasonable $50.00 (+/-) at REI, sales can bring it down close to $35 if you keep an eye on it.
