Default Anyone have experience with walk up permits in Sierra?

The HST is pretty much booked through September 19! Flying from Fl without permits is a little unnerving especially since we have a group of 4. Plan to allocate 2 days to get permit Incase first day is a bust. Second option is start after September 19 outside quota season. Thoughts? We did get nobo JMT permits just Incase but really want to do both.

Wish I could help SS, sorry, I've hiked through the Sierra many times now, but always had permits beforehand.

That being said: our 2nd JMT finished up on October 1st, and the weather was fantastic.

THAT being said, on our 2017 SHR, we got thoroughly dumped on September 21st.... but THAT being said, two days later that snow was gone. It's all a crap-shoot!

Glad you got your permits. In case anyone else is wondering about walk up permits, I did get walk up permits in 2012 for the JMT southbound from Happy Isles (got to the wilderness center in the valley really early in the morning), although they no longer offer walk up permits from there. In 2018, I got walk up permits for the JMT to start from Deer Creek for a southbound hike on the JMT. I chose Deer Creek because the Ferguson Fire had Tuolomne Meadows covered in smoke.

Walk up permits aren't too much of a problem if you are flexible on your starting point, but its still better to get them beforehand if you can.
