    I remember hearing about this a few months ago via FB. The likely culprit was a fisher cat...which is not feline, but rather a member of the weasel family:

    Yikes! I doubt any of us plan on getting bit by an animal. Memorable for sure!

    Neither link mentioned it but I would be concerned about rabies.

    But thankfully that wasn't the case here.

    I recall an incident several years ago where a sleeping hiker was bitten on the hand in her sleep by a rabid fox.

    It happened at a shelter in TN/NC I think.

    A rabid animal is probably my second concern being out for several days, second to ticks . I remember being out for a over nighter locally got to where I was setting up it was super foggy. As soon as I put my pack down on the ground I looked up to see a big fox running straight at me probably 20' away . My heart started racing a bit it got 10' away it looked up and noticed me and then tore off the other way. I was gonna put the pack between us but holy crap that's the last thing I wanna do is have to fight off a rabid animal !
