I remember hearing about this a few months ago via FB. The likely culprit was a fisher cat...which is not feline, but rather a member of the weasel family:

While searching for that unknown edge in life, never forget to look home. For the greatest edge you can find in life is to stand in the protective shadow of those who love you.

Yikes! I doubt any of us plan on getting bit by an animal. Memorable for sure!
    Thank you for the link.

Neither link mentioned it but I would be concerned about rabies.

But thankfully that wasn't the case here.

I recall an incident several years ago where a sleeping hiker was bitten on the hand in her sleep by a rabid fox.

It happened at a shelter in TN/NC I think.

A rabid animal is probably my second concern being out for several days, second to ticks . I remember being out for a over nighter locally got to where I was setting up it was super foggy. As soon as I put my pack down on the ground I looked up to see a big fox running straight at me probably 20' away . My heart started racing a bit it got 10' away it looked up and noticed me and then tore off the other way. I was gonna put the pack between us but holy crap that's the last thing I wanna do is have to fight off a rabid animal !
