By the way, we don't have a listing for every shelter yet. If you add a listing for a shelter, someone (me) has to manually edit the link to it into the list. Let me know if it goes a while and I miss it. Back to work...

Yikes! That list and those mileage figures are old, Rock!

At first glance: Joe's Hole is no more, that's 'Cooper Brook', lean-tos at Daicey Pond have been removed, and the last entry s/b 'The Birches' which is about half a mile away from Katahdin Stream Campground - 2168ish.

I'll fix the milage and list when I get to that section I guess.

I've got a new idea about how to do this. Instead of only linking to the shelter entry in this forum section, I'm trying to create a search link that will bring up a search result for anything that is said about a place like Springer Mountain Shelter or Stover mountain shelter for example. What I need y'all to do is try test link 1 & 2 and tell me if the searches come out right. Thanks!

The errors in the list of shelters is my bad...not Sgt. Rocks...To create the list I used a database that was a few years old and based on an old A.T. databook.(don;t know exact but probably year 2000)...The database had a lot of entries so I searched for the word Shelter. I got 256 entries. Some were excluded and some campgrounds might have gotten lost in the process.... Mileage is at best approximate as it is in almost any data source due to measurement error, trail reocations, etc. A newer data base is available but I haven't searched and matched against the old one yet... Please send corrections so the list can be updated and completed. . . . Does anyone have a count of the shelters on the trail...I recall reading 260 somewhere but don't know if this count includes items like campgrounds and so forth...

OK, I've put the new search link in all Georgia shelters and NC/Tennessee shelters. Let me know if they work for you. Of course not every shelter has an entry, but this search should bring up anything ever posted about that shelter - if anything.

    Default Georgia Shelters

'Deer' Gap Shelter should be 'Deep' Gap Shelter and the mileage in the Handbook is 64.2.

Add two of the newer shelters:

    (14.7) Gooch Mountain Shelter
    (26.6) Woods Hole Shelter

There are two shelters between Amicalola Falls SP and Springer Mountain that would be worth adding:

(-8.7) Max Epperson Shelter (at Amicalola Falls SP)
    (-1.5) Black Gap Shelter

    =======================

It would be pretty neat to have photo links included in the table of shelters, and even better if the photos had descriptions of the shelters accomodations.

It looks like the data book used dates back to atleast 1990, if not before. None of the shelter changes after 1990 are shown here, and the mileage reflects that time as well. However, it still is nice to see the list - like a trip down memory lane, and it illustrates how much things have changed in the last 13 years.

Actually, having looked more closely at the shelter list, I would have to revise the data book year I mentioned. It looks pretty certain to be the '92 book. There are several in here that were built in '91 and '92 (like Deep Gap, Thomas Knob and Bryant Ridge), but none after that (for example, Baldpate, Brown Fork Gap, Wesser Bald, Rice Field, etc, which were built 93-95 are missing, and the list still includes Grafton Notch and many others no longer there), and some shelters that were removed in the '92 period are still included (like Zeager Shelter in PA). Just a few examples....

That's a big task! Maybe you could try farming it out and letting various folks take on different sections?

Well creating the links requires doing some coding and you have to have editor permission to gt into the page and do it. I would love to farm it out but I'm not sure how I would go about doing it frm here. There was a lot of copying and pasting to get it done and it was mostly redundant and very repetative stuff that need some cleaning and debugging after doing a section. I guess if someone wanted to coulenteer to do it they could get with AT Troll and get moderator administration privilidges for this forum - then they could do it.

1026.00 Hemlock Hill Campground and Shelter

Is this the Ensign Cowall shelter? no campground there but there is 4 miles earlier at the Pogo campground.

We relocated the trail away from Hemlock Hill in '97, and it was removed in '99. It was replaced that fall with Cowall Shelter, north across the road and a little through the woods.

    Rock,

If it helps, you can use a spreadsheet that I made and parked on my website. I'd also be glad to do whatever coding that you cared to have done on it (your styles, etc.), and then send it to you or link it to you. I don't really remember what changes/simplifications that I made from the ATLDHA data, but no "real" changes were made.

Full Shelter List, 2003, Excel Version

I also made a PDF, for any that wanted to print the same material out, but wanted slightly less information, and wanted everything to print on three large pages. Also good for folks that can't handle Excel spreadsheets.

If I can help you in any way, please ket me know. I have one of those useless web design certificates/certifications.

Awesome list. I was trying to figure out what order is it presently in? How hard would it be to put it in a South to North order or visa versa. I know I could do it but I don't know the shelter order in either direction. I guess I could look in the Companion.

I'm currently hard at work on a better version, with a search inside whiteblaze, and a search on google for each shelter or hut. Also included are cities or towns close to the trail. Mileages are given from each end, and they will be in order by state. I've collected the data and am formatting it now. Should be ready in the next few days. Did I mention that I'm a bit GEEKED?

Default AT shelter list with waypoints and map URL's

Here's another variation on AT shelter data derived from AT shelter waypoints providing waypoint file and URL's to topo/image/road maps

    http://www.cs.utk.edu/~dunigan/at/

It will be updated from 2004 trailbook shortly, but it needs GPS data for some of the new shelters.

501 Shelter is 4.1 miles north of William Penn Shelter. I assume "Pine Grove" means Route 501.

(From the 1998 Pa. AT Guide). There was a relocation between Swatara Gap and Rausch Gap in, I think, 1999 or 2000, so these mileages are now a little different. It feels to me like there's now an extra mile or two between Swatara Gap and Rausch Gap.
