    If you're driving from Detroit, for about the same or shorter distances (if they let you drive through Canada ), I'd be looking at the Adirondacks or maybe the Finger Lakes area for amazing fall colors and fewer people. If you're really stuck on the AT and want great ridge-line hikes and views, the White Mountains in NH are hard to beat and only another couple hours of driving. And the Whites have shuttle services.
