    Default Bears - VA603 Troutdale to South Fork/VA 672

I'm planning to section hike from VA603 (N of Old Orchard Shelter) to VA672 (South Fork Holston River Road) around Labor Day. The ATC has some pretty recent warnings about bear activity in this stretch and discourages camping. Bear boxes appear to now exist at Hurricane and Trimpi Shelters.

Anyone recently hike this area who can comment on bear activity? (Yes, I know what they are. Yes, I know about food/cooking safety. I'm interested in the extent of the problem, "Bears and Backpacking 101.")

    Thanks for your help.

Lots of bears in that area, especially around the horse camps on VA603 which is next to the parking lot where you will start. They seem to have lost all fear of humans. Carry bear spray.
