Default Erwin -> Hampton Section Hike in September

Just did Hot Springs -> Erwin couple of weeks ago so time to plan for next section: Erwin -> Hampton. Some questions for the collective.

Going up and over Roan Mountain could get sporty with winter conditions. I was originally thinking October, but realize that might not be a good idea. So now I知 thinking September. How late in September could I start my section? I壇 like to hear from those with experience to benefit from their lessons learned.

I知 properly equipped and motivated for temps in the teens, but not for frozen conditions. Only do this section at this time with micro spikes and/or snow shoes?

    Other words of wisdom?

Did that section last year in late September. It got down to 30 at night and the highs were around 60. The low temps were a bit lower than the normal average for that time of year. Very good time to go as long as you are prepared for the night time lows. Temps drop fast about 30 minutes before sunset.

First time I did Carver's Gap to US 19E was toward the beginning of October; it was 19 degrees F when we started. The trail up Hump Mountain featured plenty of ice.

If you go before Columbus Day you should have no problems with winter weather on Roan.
It's all good in the woods.

Thanks everyone - I got what I needed.

Starting section late Sept instead of mid Oct.
