Thanks Dogwood.
So today we woke up, packed up and hiked over a mountain down to a village of Kogechi. It was a rainy day. We found a tiny convenience store operated by the nicest elderly couple. We browsed and picked up 2 apples, strawberries, squid, beans salad, coffee milk, banana milk, 1 box of chocolate almonds , 1 box of chocolate macadamia nuts and 2 liters of drinking water and when I was still looking around the lady had a puzzled look on her face I made a sitting motion and asked if we could sit down somewhere. She pointed to tiny stools that i didn’t consider and we happily sat down and started on the delicious strawberries. When we looked up she brought us two cups of delicious green tea.
We left our wet ponchos and backpacks outside. When we turned around she brought out coat hangers and hung our ponchos to dry.
When we were leaving she asked us if we were sleeping in town. We pointed to the trail and said we continue on. She helped us put our ponchos on then she held our Yvonne’s hands together as a symbol of best wishes and then held my hands in the same way and then hugged us.
Japanese people in the mountains here are the nicest people I have ever met.

After the store we climbed to toge pass and down to one of the teshoude remains where we found a japanese ‘lean to’ with electricity but because we have hammock we could not sleep in it. I pitched the hammocks in the woods behind.

enough talking......let's get walking !
Great pics!
Just wondering, is Japan per se so perfectly clean and litter-free, or did you manage to mask away the litter in your pics?
Japan is litter free. That part is amazing. Another part that is amazing is besides being litter free there are NO trash cans anywhere besides bottle recyclables next to vending machines. It is mind boggling but I can guarantee you will spend time carrying your litter around wondering where to put it.

In Japanese culture walking while eating is considered rude. Hence one reason why the absence of so many public trash cans and litter. I suspect you didn't see many noshing while walking on the pilgrimage. Plus Japanese culture has a generally high degree of intimate respectful underlying worldview of living harmoniously with and as part of Nature/environment, not separate from it and here for being raped by humanity.
