Default Anyone hike with a Malinois?

Being a dog lover I recently picked up an 8 week mal pup....looking forward to putting in some miles with him and my jrt this spring.....being a highly driven breed he will be trained, socialized and leashed around others.....just curious as to others who hike with them how they do on trail. Originally bred in for general farm work including herding I’m curious to see how most react with wildlife....

I hope your JRT can keep up with the Malinois.

I used to have a JRT that ran 5ks with me. We got third in the dog division twice, beat both times by much larger dogs, and she wasn’t the one slowing us down.

I even trained her to pull me while I wore roller blades!

Great little Mail you’ve got there as well, another breed I would love to have at some point. Those two together should be fun (interesting) in another year or two.

Y the jack pulls my son every morning on his skate board a mile or so...he also pulls my 220lb arse w ease....he’s not liking the pup so far as he’s kind of an arsehole with other dogs...hopefully time will help! Definitely two high energy dogs! Starting w trainer this week and doing the ALT next week with the jack and my son....

The malinois will do great on the trail. Very smart, high energy dogs that need a job. Just FYI - it's going to try and herd you the entire hike

Yep already destroyed my jeans! Starts for formal training soon to channel that energy. Planning to train for protection and or search and rescue.

I've worked with LE who have these dogs and have been around others who hike with them. I put them in the same category for hiking buddies as border collies, german shepherds and hunting dogs...they make some of the trail partners as they have more energy to burn than we do. Professional training is the best idea...they are awesome dogs (in my top five dogs to own after I no longer have BCs).

    Good choice IMO

Thx, I’ve wanted one for several years. I have a relative that’s a retired LEO who has 3....incredible athletes! Definitely using a professional trainer...so far other than being mouthy he’s doing great! The jrt not liking him so far but assume will grow more tolerant as time passes....

Watching that video - Hope yours does not develop a tendency to roam, seems like there is no backyard fence in the world that could ever contain these beautiful pups.

I have a Dutch Shepherd that is close to Mal. He has a ton of energy and likes to take off exploring. They have a huge herding instinct and I've caught him trying to herd hikers on the trail. He also likes to take off and explore, sometimes coming back after a couple of hours. They are great dogs. I would wait until he's a little older before starting any extended hiking.

That’s the plan! My down and cuben would be no match for his puppy teeth!!!! I’m not taking him till he’s got total recall etc...

    How is your pup doing?

Pretty dog. I have a 6 yo Mal that is trained and certified as a FEMA search dog. I wish I could take him on the AT but I think he would be too disruptive to others in camp ( I could solo stealth camp.) Aside from the high energy and drive, they are always in working mode and I think every time he heard a noise he would be up trying to check it out. That and he eats like a horse. His food would weigh more than mine (though he could carry some of it.

Hard to believe that sweet little face is capable of so much destruction if not channeled properly. I think there is a common Mal owner saying "and that's why we don't have nice things....". I'm sure you know about their developing skeletons and joints. They are willing to do a lot more than their body can handle up to a 12-18 months. You have to be the brains for these guys early on if you want them to be active in their golden years. Definitely not a recommended first dog for anyone but they are a special kind of dog if you can handle them. Good luck.

Thanks...he’s definitely a handful! Like my jrt but much larger, already 50 lbs! I plan to start in search and rescue training or protection work. We’re currently going to general obedience training a few times per week as I really want his recall to be solid. I was reading earlier about a girl who thru hiked cdt with two Mali’s...crazy. I see him being a great trail dog as he matures....I’ll definitely be using dehydrated dog food on trail...3 cups per day is heavy!
