The Shenandoah Mountain Rescue Group (SMRG) will be providing preventative SAR (PSAR) at SNP for the next three busy weekends. SMRG volunteers will be stationed at popular trail heads in the Central District to provide visitors information about the trails and encourage safe hiking practices. I've supported this effort for the last three years and have worked at the Dark Hollow Falls, White Oak Canyon, Hawksbill Gap, and Old Rag trail heads. Though most visitors are well prepared for their hike its not uncommon to see visitors wearing "flip flops" or sandals and/or starting their hikes without any water. These unprepared hikers are usually receptive to recommendations to wear proper foot wear and take water with them.
