    Default section hike mid-late October

    Hi!
I have a week off on October 19-25 and am trying to choose a nice section hike for that time. I am located in Boston but can fly down south if there is more chance of good weather. I am looking for a place which will be relatively accessible and that does not necessitate serious winter gear. It will be my first time on the trail but I've trekked allot in other parts of the world.
    What would you suggest?
    Thanks!

Throw a dart at an AT map. Except perhaps for NH & ME, any part of the AT should be great, subject to localized weather (and Fall color) forecasts.

I'll be hiking Max Patch to Hot Springs, NC myself, Oct 19-21

Weather is quite variable, but it can be mild to downright hot from mid atlantic to ga. Winter gear isnt much of worry south of NH. Good time to walk.

Shenandoah can be nice if catch colors.

NJ/NY would probably be nice then. Reasonably easy trail. A lot of thru hikers comment how nice NJ was, which is unexpected.

You can get a bus to the Delaware Water Gap from NYC. Depending on where you end up in a week, getting home might be a little more of a challenge. That's the hard part of doing a week long section hike of the AT - figuring out how to get to and from it.

Staying on the bald, or near it? I'll be there that Friday night and staying through Sat to camp with a non-hiker friend of mine. Think we met before at a Hot Springs hang? This will be a ground-dwelling trip for me.

If OP wants to join that would be great. Thinking he could make Erwin in that time frame? Regarding late October weather in the south... you never know what you're going to get, though its mostly going to be mildly warm with some cool nights. Was real warm about that time last year. Current forecast has it being near freezing then. Its been so warm recently that I'm afraid the weather is likely to do a flip flop and get real cold earlier than expected. If you really want to count on milder weather, you probably ought to go with a lower elevation hike, which means staying out of NC/TN. Further north actually is probably better, though a Ga thru hike might work.

Yes, if weather and timing and coordination with my little hiking group works out as I expect, we'll camp on Max Patch that Friday night, hoping to catch (maybe) sunset and/or sunrise.

I have not been to a hang in Hot Springs. Sorry! But would love to get to meet you that Friday night, sure. Sent you an email just now.

Oops, my bad, someone else I guess. Nevertheless, would love to hang out. Buddy is leaving earlier and hoping to get the shelf site. If not, we'll be on top in the throng on top somewhere. Got your email and will be in touch.
