    Default Altra 3.5............4.0 size prob

Started hiking early this year and I went to REI to buy gear. The shoe specialist sold me LaSportiva’s which I actually like. I normally wear 10 ½ or 11 and got a size 12. After about 6 months because people raved about them I decided to get Lone Peak 3.5 size 12 but they were a blister machine because they fit different from the LaSportiva’s and were too small. I kept them because they were a great utility shoe for goofing off. But I did get a pair of the then new Lone Peak 4.0. Because the 3.5 size 12 were too small I got the 4.0 in size 13. They are GIANT. I can literally put the size 12 Lone Peak 3.5 COMPLETELY INSIDE the size 13 Lone Peak 4.0 except for the last little bit of the heel. Wearing the 4.0 my entire foot rotates inside the shoe. As in rotates from toe to heal if the trail is on the slope of a hill making them almost impossible to use. Going up and down inclines they are ok but rotate like crazy on hill sides. I have tried lacing different ways, 2 pair of socks, and even 2 insoles in each shoe but they are HUGE. I have worn the 4.0’s probably too much for them to accept the back in return. And the Altra people will not return an email when I tell them I have a problem. Anybody have any idea about what I should do? Or has anyone changed from 3.5 to 4.0 and noticed the size problem? Many thanks.

They increased the volume on the 4’s. I have a high volume foot and could not even get my feet into the 3.5’s, but the 4’s fit perfectly. Great shoe. I also have La Sportiva Wildcats and love them as well, different shoe, though. The Wildcats are probably better on rough terrain, (I haven’t used the 4’s on the trail yet, just around town). My suggestion is to return 4’s if you can, otherwise, maybe you can add superfeet to take up some of the volume. Is the length OK?

I find this whole Lone Peak thing infuriating.

It seems right because people that got them early reviewed and mentioned that they had gone back to being sized like the LP 3.0 which was "true to size" where the LP 3.5 was known to run a full size small. If you bought them at REI, pretty sure you can still return them.

You can return almost anything in reasonable condition to REI within a year of purchase. I got a pair of Merrell boots at REI earlier this year that I really wanted to love but couldn't get comfortable in. I went back to REI and spent three hours with a very patient shoe specialist and left with the perfect shoes.

On the PCT this year, everyone with Timps hated them - what's obviously a design issue manifests with large tears in the upper. Multiple people had this issue.
