    While I never understood it... I long ago learned that electrical charges like to accumulate at pointy spots... So if you take shelter under a rock ledge, the ledge creates a "pointy spot" where electrical charges will collect and that spot is MORE likely to be struck by lightning relative to the rest of the ground around it.
