Let's head for the roundhouse; they can't corner us there!
I think the level attached to a hiking pole with a rubber band would give you the most practical, accurate, and fastest results.
Feet above head...not swollen., ready to hike

For many years we've always targeted shelters because we can find water there, and maybe sit down, meet the folks, and cook if we want. But then we pack up and find a camping spot within a mile. Never fails. And if, rarely, there is threatening weather then we stay in the shelter but this rarely happens.
I actually found a tiny little level that comes in a frame hanging kit. I don't physically attach it to my hiking pole, but find that the combination of the hiking pole handles and baskets are close enough to making the pole level that I just hold the level to the side of the hiking pole and I get close enough results. It makes easy work out of comparing two spots in a campsite to see which one is more level, or when setting up in a hillside, quickly finding which direction the ground actually slopes so I'm not getting rolled off my sleeping pad sideways.
Here is an example of a picture hanging kit that includes a tiny level like the one I found in a smaller kit.
