Thread: Canvas

    Default Canvas

Any suggestions on where to source canvas? I’m interested in making a backyard wall tent for my kids and don’t want to buy a glamorous hipster version

Ah, so you want to make your own glamorous, hipster version, yes?

Amazon sells it in various forms - canvas drop cloths, canvas fabric, etc.

If you're willing to accept alternative materials to canvas, the least expensive and simplest solution would be to buy a cheap wall tent from Walmart. The kids wont care. I would expect that any bulk canvas you buy will need to be treated to be water resistant, and the cost of materials, even cheap drop cloths, will add up fast.

Amazon has roll canvas you can search for. If you just search for canvas you get 400 pages of matches and the first few are not what you are looking for.
    I'm not lost. I'm exploring.

just "thinkin' out loud"maybe not canvas, but how about some tarps from harbor freight? They're cheap and come in more colors than just blue.... and if you're looking for a sewing project I'd guess it would be possible to make up something workable that way....

If you can get suitable poles, consider making a tepee. Nice shelter, and only needs a few long straight seams.

You can also buy military surplus canvas tents pretty cheap. Certainly meets the "not hipster" criteria.

Michaels is another option that might have what you are looking for if you want to see it in person first

Years ago, when involved with the boy scouts there was a individual that offered a tent making course. He had a lead on the seconds from London Fog raincoats. I think it was polyester blend, a lot lighter than canvas and just as durable. There are some super heavy duty canvas wall tents made in Canada that are used by summer camps and outfitters.

"external tent material 210T 3000MM Waterproof Polyester Taffeta"

Since when does that equal canvas?

The floor is 150D oxford cloth, so maybe that's why they can call this thing canvas?

    Epic thread.

OP: "I want to make a tent, where can I get canvas?"
WB: "Canvas is dumb." "Buy from China." "Build a teepee."

The only thing missing was "buy a tent".

He got recommendations on where to look in posts 2, 4, & 5. He also did get 3 buy tent recommendations in posts 5, 8, &12, with 8 being a buy surplus canvas military tent and post 13 responding to a concern about cost. The OP was thankful for the suggestions. And a tepee is a portable conical tent made of skins, cloth or canvas...
