MH Optic 2.5 vs Talus 3 Tents

I've used a Mountain Hardware Trango 2 for the past 20+ years and absolutely love it. I've finally had to admit that my old legs need something lighter. The Trango II weighs just under 10lbs. I know the Optic (6lb3oz) and Talus (6lb1oz) are still on the heavier side by today's standard, but my daughter and I like the extra room they will provide. The Optic is 37sf and the Talus is 38.9sf. They cost about the same.

Comments on their durability/versatility/other issues or make other suggestions greatly appreciated!!

If you want a tent that is spacious for 2 people, does a good job keeping out bugs and the weather, and is light weight then consider the Rainshadow by Tarptent. My wife and I, along with our 95 pound dog, have been using one for years with good success. You can see it here.

i just bought a Talus 4 for our family tent. it would be definitely be cramped with four adults, especially if anyone is over 6-ft. it's great for two plus child. it came with lots of extras: footprint included, gear loft, four side pockets. there's a ton of head room vertical-wise, though I may just be used to 1-man and 2-man tents. on inspection the quality is excellent.

Thanks for the suggestions. I found a new older model of the Kelty Gunnison 2 that is 37 sqft and field weight appears to be 5lb 10oz. We will be splitting the weight, so that is not an issue. Only cost $99!!

$99 is a winner. It’s still a 5 1/2++ pound tent.

No. My daughter and I get out for 2-4 nights at a time with a goal of doing the NC section by the end of 2019. We are happy with 10-15 miles per day.

If you want to look at something that will ease weight as you get a bit older and you have some extra cash, you could look at the copper spur UL3. 41 sq ft, 3.5 lbs trail weight.
Often a sale, but would still be $350+ on sale!
