Default Starting Section Hike from Springer this Sunday, May 20

    Hey all,

I'm doing an 80 mile section this coming week of BMT starting at Springer Mountain. Any insights or information as to the current condition of the trail in this section? Will I be bushwacking or is the trail fairly well maintained? Thanks,

    Counselor

I am sorry... can't tell you about the BMT; however, the AT is very well marked and maintained. The only thing that slowed me down on it was finding the actual marker on Springer Mountain itself (not clear as it is on a rock that is at ground level amongst the vegetation).

I don't think it is bushwhacking at all. The trail can be a bit overgrown and relatively difficult to navigate in spots (relative to the AT) but I don't recall any problems through that section. I always recommend maps on the BMT however. Have fun....this is a great trail and you will likely not see anyone else on your trip.

I can tell you the first 30+ miles are about as well kept as the AT. I'd expect pretty much the same throughout. The difference is you might have some weeds and such leaned out over the trail. But the trail will be very well defined.

I did the first 80 miles in March of last year. The trail was marked well but I can't say that about the road walk sections.

Too early in the season to be overgrown.

Y'all know that the trail maintainers haven't been allowed to do their work since March, right?

    Check the weather.
I’m in North Carolina. We’re 2 days into a week of rain. And more rain next week.
If Georgia gets the same weather it won’t be pretty.
Good luck. Be safe. Have fun.

Check the date of the OP. It is from two years ago.
    More walking, less talking.
