Default Iron Mountain Gap to US19E Trees?

Hoping to complete this section Friday-Sunday of this weekend. I know it's peak thru-hiker season and I'm planning to avoid the shelters and hammock. I'm worried about finding any place to hang Friday night around the Roan Massif. Is my best option for trees between Beartown Mountain and Roan on night one? Night two I reckon we will find some spot dropping down off of Hump Mtn.

    Thanks!

You wont have any issues finding a place to hammock.

I also hang and hiked this section last month. I would just caution you to find a spot with some kind of wind block.

Going north, I’ve hung at Greasy Creek Gap - piped spring nearby.

Never camped at Roan Mtn but expect wind if you do. They have had winter group hangs up here so definitely plenty of trees. No water so carry it up.

Barn aka Overmountain Shelter- I’ve hung in the vicinity (close but out of sight). Water nearby

Little Hump - after cresting Little Hump and just before coming out of the trees before Humo, there are some spots in the woods and small water source. I’ve hung there.

Doll Flats after Big Hump - personally haven’t camped here but ton of trees for hammocks. Piped spring nearby per Guthook.

    Enjoy

I too have seen several hammocks on Roan Mtn over the years. Need to be a pretty experienced hanger for those possible wind and temp conditions though as an FYI

It’s a great gear tester for sure.
Full size tarp and underquilt recommended

I hung across the path from the Clyde Smith Shelter after a tough day up and down Unaka Mountain. This was close enough to see the shelter, but like 50 yards away. Probably crowded when the thrus are coming through though. I did this in the fall when the Southbounders were coming. Had one at the shelter and a couple next to the shelter, but I was able to stay away from the them. The next night, I stayed at the campsite halfway up Roan Mountain. It was nice. Supposed to be a spring, but I didn't see it. There was a spring at the bottom of Roan. I liked that campsite because it split the Roan climb in half. It did get a little windy up there in October, but not too bad. I had it all to myself. You could probably get quite a few hammocks in there. I saw a lot of people the next day coming down the balds with tents. I think they froze up there. The wind was probably near 40 MPH on the balds.
