I had to follow the Traffic link to find out where this was.
4 feet of snow in New York. The hiker was credited with having the proper gear, etc.
He spent a night in a shelter before calling for help.
    Well done all!

This weekend I was breaking trail which crossed a small gully. Little did I know there was dead fall a foot off the ground under the four foot deep drift. When I stepped into the gully, my snow shoe slid off the tree, I fell over and my shoes got stuck under the tree. I had to pop the shoes off and dig my way out of there. I can see in retrospect how easy it could have been to break an ankle. Took a good 5 minutes to extract myself.

So, what do I do next? I try to cross a stream which had 4 feet of snow over the rocks. I promptly crashed through the snow into the water. Which thankfully was only a few inches deep. Still got my feet wet and gloves soaked. Getting out of there was also a task and I almost lost a snowshoe in there too. Once I dug myself out of that hole, I decided it was time to drink my hot chocolate and head home!

I'm lucky I didn't end up like that guy.

Default The guy is staying with me, not a broken ankle

Guy is a friend of mine and has been staying at my house. I am about 4 miles from the AT at Gulf Rd.

Anyway, he didn't break his ankle. He has one kidney and hiking is what keeps him healthy. I think he is a little out of shape and eating too much corn syrup. He had some kind of gout, which is usually caused by Uric Acid build up from corn syrup.

Anyway, I tried hiking with him a couple of weeks ago from Dalton to Kay Wood. It took 4 hours to do the 2.1 from Dalton to Grange Hall Road. I walked back to my house from Grange Hall. It was drifting to thigh deep, but not 4 foot. It was consistently over my knees (I am 6'1").

Last weekend, my iPhone died. He decided to go hike up to Kay Woods, told me he would be back the next day if the trail was too deep to keep hiking. I didn't know about his situation until after they picked him up and took him out.

He is hoping to be back on trail soon. Flipping down to North Carolina.

    Gout is imminently treatable.
Glad he’s better off than the news told the story.

I definitely have to comment on the latest thread. I am the hiker that was helped at the Kay Woods shelter. He is absolutely correct. No broken ankle and I do not understand why the media got this wrong. Must need more funding or something. Thanks to all !
