2.5 mph x 4 hours is a respectable speed. Certainly adequate for the AT.

Of course, it's a lot easier to do 2.5 MPH walking around town then it is on the AT, although that is a fairly common average speed for many sections of the trail.

I wonder if anyone has ever "found themselves" hiking the AT?

These days I don’t find myself on the A.T. nearly often enough.

I have nothing but respect for her, but with absolutely no backpacking experience except walking around town with her pack. The article in and of itself has so many errors (AT [around 2200 miles] is longer than the PCT [2600+ miles], "The AT, while longer (nope), is better marked (yup), more heavily traveled (probably) and more physically challenging, (nope). She got inspired by watching the movie Wild (but we won't go there again). Good luck young lady, you're going to need it.

The more heavily traveled part, I wasn't counting day or weekend hikers.

I know that the Cape Cod Chronicle isn't exactly the New York Times, but I'm thrown by the number of basic spelling and typographical errors in that short article. Spring Mountain? Hiking Polls?
"Waning Gibbous" would be a great trail name.

I noticed the fractured text immediately. I always do. I quit worrying about it.
What does bother me and I would like to know: Does she have an Emotional Support Service Critter?

Hey Wayne remember a while back when we were talking about people seeing "A Walk In The Woods and/or Wild" and getting the idea to hit the trail. I remember when I got into serious long distance hiking, I visited local State Parks and National Forest to tune up for the hikes. I talked to the various rangers about what I was doing and if there might be a problem. Everyone of them said they wouldn't say anything if I made sure to keep my camp small, no wood fires and cleaned up before I left. I learned a lot during those weekends and weeks before I left for the PCT. Of course when I got out there, the first part was like I trained in, but I adjusted.

I say this because the article makes it seem like this young lady hasn't done any prep work.
