    Default New section hiker luxury...

On a recent car camping trip, I looked over at my tent after sunset... And it looked like it had Christmas lights on it. My gf brought some string lights or fairy lights from her house and strung them across it. Hers we're powered by 3 AA batteries, but I got to thinking about a lighter version for hiking.
    .
She found, and bought me, a 9' long string of them powered by two round flat batteries.
    .
I can't wait to string them up on my Notch on my next section hike.
Oh, how much of a weight extravagance is this?
    0.6 ounce or 17 grams

I've seen that done a few times. Good way to find your tent in the dark.

I have a set I've wanted to carry, but always decide not to.

Some of us go to great lengths and drive thousands of miles to get away from light pollution.

We have carried a bunch of those little battery votive candles, and spread them around the campsite. It's kinda cool.

I got a 6' led light string that has a usb output on it. I can plug it into my battery pack and it runs for hours and hours without taking much battery life at all.
Not really sure why this is considered a section hiker luxury though, thru hikers need to see in their tent as well

Yeah, but why would I pay BA $39.95 for an $8 string of misspelled Christmas lights?

Good point - my answer is: because I'm a section hiker!

I couldn't tell you, I wouldn't pay extra for it. I was actually semi-interested in a BA tent on Reddit until I noticed the glow option.

Most hikers who reviewed the mtnglo tents didn't like the concept. After using them, however, most really liked them better than mini lanterns or headlamps. There's the weight penalty of about an ounce for the LEDs themselves, plus three AAA batteries, but many used their USB phone charger battery to power them. If you can get the tent at a great price, you can always remove the LEDs if you want.

Interesting, I guess it could be handy for that late night bathroom visit to find the tent again if I need to wander a bit off. Usually get in to camp late and stay up long enough to eat and maybe chat for a few. Could be handy for early morning tent cleanup before tearing down I guess as well.

I have some of these lights, but almost never take them along, except for group hike novelty, and even then very rarely. First time was to Walls of Jericho on the TN/AL border years ago, but one of my hike buddies still talks about them ... in "glowing" terms. LOL

I'd like to hear more about the USB version! These days I always carry an Anker battery pack, so the idea of not having to carry 3 AA batteries (or whatever) dedicated solely to a gimmick string of lights intrigues me. Any suggestions on where to acquire a strand powered by USB plug?

Or, for DIYers like me, can I rewire a set I already have to a USB plug? Hmmmmm....

It matches my hiking shoes with the lights in the heels.

These brought some atmosphere to a late October evening at the Old Job Shelter last year.
