    Dogwood,
I whole heartedly agree. But. She’s still in TN or barely in VA. And it’s still snowing on the AT and PCT for sure. 8’ on the PCT at Tahoe in the last week. Sounds like similar amounts in New England. It’s way too early to know what to do and where to go.
Make it up as she goes.
Snowshoes: Given the cell coverage on the AT and numerous towns up the trail, it seems simple enough to my simple brain to have a pair of light running snowshoes waiting at a town.
    Or not.

    Default Heather Anderson

if there's any way this lady does this - TC CY - FKT or not (I learned some new mnemonics out here) - with all
this adverse weather - (not to mention fungus in the air (?) - it will really be an amazing, remarkable achievement!
COME ON, AMISH! (Amish? Anish?) GO GIRL!!!

Ahh, yeah, ahh Heather is quite capable. No one here is attempting to give her advice. We're second guessing what she might be planning. Uhh, why? Umm, maybe it's because she's doing what we're anal-izing? She's out there trudging along pushing herself. More than can be said about any of us agonizing over this posting BS. Best most of us can do is applaud her or at least hand out a cup of electrolyte water as she rambles by in pigtails beaming with that Anish smile.

Lol. Heather strikes me as someone having some flexibility to adapting on the fly but by no means is she doing this without a well thought out plan. She damn well knows what's going on! She's not doing this as a half cocked yahoo after only public sensationalism.

Notice how it was phrased. She's doing this, not attempting this. The track record is evident.

    She gets it done.

Her story is about achievement, courage, self awareness, and what hiking used as a vehicle can help a person become without becoming overly cocky or through self aggrandizement. I sincerely hope she stays focused on that.

Seriously, check out her TedX talk. That is someone speaking from the heart, not faked, talking about her life not just hiking.

There is a realism in that talk that reaches deeply to a message that far exceeds hiking accomplishments.

I haven't heard any one make negative comments about her abilities or goals, just comments about the difficulties she'll face with what looks like an extraordinary snow year, and maybe some wondering about how she'll handle it. Then a couple posts that are the Whiteblaze equivalent of STHU. Nice.

Yep, conditions in the North East are far from ideal. If nothing else, it will be one heck of a messy spring. Snow levels are also high in Montana. It will be more then the usual level of challenge for sure.

I also have been following the early hikers on trail journals. Most have eluded to starting early to avoid the bubble. I have observed that a higher amount of early hikers are skipping sections to avoid bad weather, staying in hostels and motels for more O days and are leaving the trail suposingly to return when it gets warmer.
The excuse to start early to avoid the so called bubble, or to have adaquite time to finish doesn’t hold any water. I started in early April, took 24 0 days averaged 10.8 miles a day and still had time to finish.
A lot of folks that are new to long distance hiking, when they decide to thru-hike, just can’t wait to start so they shove off as soon as they can not realizing how detrimental dealing with winter weather can be to have a successful hike.

Heather posted a brief message today about the cold and wet and icy and hypothermic conditions in Virginia. I doubt that Zero is in her vocabulary.

I remember the photo. I either didn’t read or forgot the message.
One zero from Springer to Virginia. That is hard core.

    Capehiker,
Thanks for the reminder. That was quite an entry. I obviously missed it at the time.

She has a website, instagram feed, she's all over facebook... she may be a total badass, but she sure doesn't seem to be doing much about protecting her privacy!
