My kids got REI youth packs at that age. REI's pack fitters readjusted them as the kids grew, clear through their teens. It was very economical over time. They never complained about discomfort, either.

i bought my son this great REI passage 38 when he was 12. he got 2 seasons (1 weekend trip each season) out of it and is 15 now and grown out of it. its been used twice for a total of 4 days and its in great shape. they don't make it anymore but i've seen them sell on ebay for around $45 so I can offer this one at that price plus applicable shipping. here's the link on REI's site. i have pictures of him using it too if it will help see the sizing. It is adjustable size in the back panel so as he got older we were able to adjust it.

Sure - here's two photos. One on and one off, complete with Jiffy Pop as that's his trail name... 11811314_10152882057596086_178006289418806064_n.jpg11249225_10152882056651086_3334714592601120796_n.jpg

I’ll take it. This is my first time buying on the forum. What’s next?

I hope you enjoy hiking with the boy as much as I did with my kids when they were young.

One of the things you want to keep in mind is that the TOTAL weight of the pack should not exceed 20% of your child's weight.
For the average 10yo boy (i.e. 50th percentile), that's only going to be 14lbs.

I started camping with my boys when they were 7yo. They were both in the 90th percentile, but that still meant I had to stay under 12lbs.

One of the things that frustrated me trying to stay in that target was the number of 'kid' labelled back packs that were 3lbs to 5lbs EMPTY. (at least the one for sale above is only 2lb4oz).

I went somewhat over 20% with my kids. No harm done. Kids vary a lot. Kids also wreck things, thus somewhat heavier/sturdier packs. The pack in question looks like a good choice.

Same with both my boys. We abandoned the 20% guideline. It wasn't the weight that we needed to regulate it was the distance between breaks. After 3-4 miles they wanted to break free and run around. We planned most trips during those years along lake Superior so they could stop and throw rocks in the lake or river, climb trees, go for a swim ect. Our longest days would be 10-12 miles between campsites though with all the extra running I am certain the boys doubled that mileage.

Jumping on this and not meaning to hijack. Has anyone with kids tried the Dueter Fox or ACT 30? Or the kids Osprey models?
My sons school backpack at times is heavier than the 20% number...That doesnt mean I want him carrying that 4 miles at a time. He is seven...will be eight late summer...
Thanks for letting me jump on
