Mid April-Weekend-er
Grayson Highlands worth the time investment? Any other areas? Virginia is the halfway point for my girlfriend and I.We have visited the Roanoke area last August and love it.

Grayson Highlands is awesome and the campground is near the Massie Gap parking area where you can hike up to
the AT and associated trail network up in the alpine meadows area. The weather can do anything up there in April.
You can get some nice spring weather or a good snow.
Another vote for Grayson Highlands. Wonderful place!
When I started walking the A.T. over a decade ago, I always carried my camera. I soon realized that a canopy of trees did not make for a good photo image, and even overlooks in clear skies gave little more than rectangles that were half green & half blue.

Thus, I gave up carrying a camera, missing the joy of a good photo only about once every 100 to 200 miles or so.
Last year, the Grayson Highlands became one of the rare times I wished I had a camera for the day or so I walked through it. Expansive views and wild horses WOULD have made for some nice shots, but I had to settle for using my Droid

The caption for the photo above notes a video I DEFINITELY wish I could have gotten!

The Grayson Highlands, and the Roan Highlands are 2 spots that I never get tired of going to on the AT. Cant go wrong with either.
