Uncle Johnny went out of the way for me several times. He will be missed. He will not be forgotten. I loved all the stuff he packed into the front room including his diving pics of colorful fish.

So sad...that explains why I’ve been getting the answering machine the last few days. I’ve been calling about a shuttle for a section in a few weeks....a true loss to the hiking community....RIP

Sad. I went through there NB in an October section hike. I was depleted. Some candy, Gatorade and a break got me back up the mountain, to the next shelter. I remember 2 or 3 guys there out front. One of them had an oxygen machine type device. Maybe him?

I stayed there on my 2016 thru hike. He was great as was his manager. The place was comfortable and convenient. I hope his family finds peace in knowing how much comfort he provided to others.

Sad to hear about Johnny. I passed though his place on several hikes and was always treated well.
My condolences to his family. I liked hanging out on the porch and listening to WQUT on the speakers there.

Definitely sad news.. When I went through Erwin last year I stayed the night at his hostel, and had the pleasure to meet him. He was super nice and super helpful, as was his wife. RIP Uncle Johnny

Sad news. The past couple of years, some famous people of the AT lore have passed on...people I was hoping to meet on my upcoming thru hike (3 years in the making). I guess I'll have to meet them on the other side someday. May they RIP.

Yes, he was special in all sorts of ways from the creation and running of such a perfectly located hostel to his treatment of the tired, dirty, and exuberant who arrived at his door. He arranged for a shuttle for me with Miss Janet in 1999 back in her earlier days. Thanks, Johnny.
