Johnny spent a full hour regaling Snacktime with AT stories, the infamous history of Erwin, and encouraging him in future AT adventures. I was amazed and heartened that he took that kind of time in the middle of a busy day to spend with a youngster. I've wanted to go back as a hiker someday and enjoy his company again, but sadly I won't get the chance now. He was such a nice man.

Never would have guessed that previously he was an HR Director. Been there three times but slept there once. I hope a new regime continues.

I stayed there several times since 1998. The Eagles were always playing thru the outdoors speakers. Uncle Johnny's hostel was definitely an iconic fixture on the AT and will be missed.

Yeah, you never know people's past until ask. Cant judge a book by the cover. I got a shuttle from a grizzled old hillbilly once in beat up old car. Turned out in his past he designed naval warships . Or parts there of

I stayed at Uncle Johnny's in April, 1999. He also gave me a shuttle. Johnny was very nice to me. My condolences.
