We used to have about 5 good months of winter, back in the 1970s. Now we're down to about 2 months of winter. So, if you boys want to winter backpack in the Southeast you better do it in January and February.

    Great trip report!
    Stupid Flatlander Rubbernecker question:
Is it possible to get up to and down off the 7 Mile Ridge Trail without wading through streams? I don't mind getting wet if there is no other way. Staying dry going up and down would be a lot nicer.
    Thanks for sharing your adventures!

There are several ways to get up to 7 Mile Ridge and Bob Mt and the Hangover---

** Park at Beech Gap and climb up.
** Park at the Wolf Laurel "cheater's trail" and climb up.
** Take Naked Ground trail up from the Kilmer memorial loops.
** Take Stratton Ridge trail up to the ridge.

** Get on Fodderstack Ridge from various trails (Farr Gap) and head up.
** Take Haoe Lead trail from Maple Springs.
** Park in Big Fat Gap and head up the South Lead trail (now the BMT).

In fact, there are no significant creek crossings getting up to the ridge unless you come up from the Citico side, i.e. South Fork trail or North Fork trail.
