Default Those little mounds of sand in ONF...

What in the world are those little sand mounds that are everywhere on the trail in ONF? They look like fire ant mounds, but, thankfully, are not. As a matter of fact, if you level one with your foot there is never any sign of life in them. So, they seem to be totally harmless. Thanks for any info!

They are made by pocket gophers.

But... but... there is never any type of tunnel near them. It is like someone just poured a gallon of sand on the ground and left it. There is no entrance nor any sign of digging at all. They look Colorado pocket gopher mounds from a distance.

SEE FOR YOURSELF. These are visible from space. In Google Earth zoom into 29.312234 x -81.756212 in the ONF. There are millions of these things, but seem to be totally harmless. I would not drive from Colorado to see them. 8-)

yeah, there's no tunnel opening through them
and if you kick them there doesn't seem to be a tunnel under them
    ????

side note....FYI, those google map images are not from space, as far as I know....they are a composite of areal photographs....from an airplane.
