I did Round Top and Kaaterskill High Peak today with a friend and it was -8 on Round Top. Warmed up to +5 by the time we got back to the car.

So what are some suggestions for MLK if very cold weather persists?

I expect Kathy and I will be there unless it's in negative numbers during the daylight. Even then we might, all depends on how we're feeling.
Kathy's getting over a cold right now and I hope I don't come down with it before MLK.

For those coming in late on Friday there's parking in Tuxedo and it's not very far from the Dutch Doctor shelter, maybe 2 miles.
Johnstown circle is closer but has less parking space. Although this time of year I doubt it'll be a problem.

hello... you pretty sure that Johnstown road will be open? If not, is the Reeves Meadow Visitor Center the next closest?

We all stay at your house and day hike? ...my guess is that nighttime lows below -10 would pretty much rule out everyone. I think we saw -5 two winter's ago, and with above zero daytime temps some of us would show up.

I thought we would be at Dutch Doctor for Saturday, so we could get to the Inn for Brunch Sunday. Figuring Bald Rocks or Tom Jones Friday, then any number of loops to get to Dutch Doctor for Saturday night. And, I have confirmed with a Conference Mucky Muck that 106 IS Closed until 1 April. That is why I suggested starting at Skannatati lot or Elk Pen if you were to come on Friday afternoon. Even late Friday from Skannatati Bald Rock is a short walk.

The Johnsontown parking circle is plowed year-'round. That is where the plow truck turns around! There are homes and a utility access road right up to the circle.

Yes, 106 (Kanawauke) is closed from the lake to Rt 17, and also Arden Valley Rd is closed from Tiorati circle to Elk Pen, although Elk Pen itself can be reached from Rt 17. Reeves Meadow is open all year as well.

I favour whatever shelters have water sources. If it's gonna be really cold I'd just as soon not have to keep a lot of water... liquid.

    Where there's snow there's water!

Although at Dutch Doctor a few days ago the snow cover was very thin and it would have been tedious to collect decently clean snow and melt it. I'm hoping we get a few inches of white stuff in the next couple of weeks.

Dutch Doctor also has a fairly reliable stream nearby. Unlike some Harriman shelters I could name.
I always know where I am. I'm right here.

So do we have a consensus for Tom Jones Friday night and Dutch Doctor Saturday night?

    OK by me!

Depends on what size generator you bring.

The bathroom at Kanawauke is about 2.5km so the generator would likely weigh less than an extension cord.

    map LNHB_MLK2017_QR.jpg

For Maprika users, go to "All Maps," find and download "LNHB_MLK_2018" which has accurate anchors and is ready to go.

I just love it when anyone else uses maprika. I think there is a way for us to share locations, but my guess is we won't want to leave our phones on anything but airplane mode, and not sure if that feature will work then. And nice map, thanks. I posted the larger park composite some years back.

Laz, and thank you for introducing me to Maprika!

I uploaded another map to Maprika that I had scanned a few years ago from the NYNJTC map. It has better trail markings, so it might be preferred. A bit larger file (3.5mb) but of course easy to delete once you're done with it.... LNHB_MLK_2018_02
