The Station at 15E
Newbie here...Quick question....If I hike NOBO from 15E to Damascus, will I spend time in the Roan Highlands? I'm told they are spectacular....
Look at a map. I don’t have one handy, nor do I know where 15E is.
I do know that the Roan Highlands are south of 19E at Elk Park, NC and north of Hot Springs, NC. The AT shelter list will show a shelter at or near the high point of Roan Mountain. Overmountain Shelter is north of Roan High Knob and south of highway 19E.

If you are talking about 19E then yes it's pretty good in clear weather. I'm unsure what the term "station" refers to. If it's the shelter at the top of Roan Mountain then Yes it's nice as long as it's not too cold.
No...start at iron mtn gap or Erwin to spend time in highlands...30 miles to 19e from iron mtn gap. Great section.Originally Posted by kbstock

Its 19E (not 15E) and that is just past the Roan Mountain section. You'll need to start at Carvers Gap TN143/NC261 and hike north. Its absolutely worth the extra miles for the views.

Wouldn’t recommend section for a newbie during the winter....potential for lots of ice etc....

We did a little dayhike going north from Carver's Gap one afternoon in late February last year. There was a little bit of old snow on the ground, and some light snow coming down. The trail goes in the woods for a short while as you ascend from the parking lot. In the woods, the old snow was a solid ice pack, but wasn't a problem. We went as far as we had time for and turned around, with snow and sleet coming down a bit harder. On the return trip, the trail was covered in an inch of new snow. As we approached the final descent, it was getting dark and we were hurrying to get to the shelter of the woods and out of the sleet stinging our faces. The very first step under the trees on a light layer of snow over the solid ice pack put two of us flat on our backs. No warning. No flailing. Just vertical to flat quicker than a blink. I remember that my head bounced on the ice - kinda hurt. A guy behind us saw what happened and avoided a repeat. A couple minutes later, the last two of our group hit the same spot, and down they went.
It was sunshine and balmy down in the valley before the hike.
It’s been snowing since Friday in that part of the world.
The folks at Mountain Harbor B&B could help with trail conditions, shuttles, etc.
