Will the ATC need to change my 2,000-miler completion certificate, ... which came in TODAY's mail?!!! 😁

Bugger why did I get injured this year, now I have to do an extra 1.8 miles. Don't think I can do it in the allocated time next year.

They were working on the NoBo accent of Bear Mountain, not sure of that was opened, but it would be a small change, not 1.8 miles.

it would be cool if the ATC maintained an annual change list over all these years, would love to map geek out looking how the path has changed year to year since its founding...

Having hiked both versions of the Justus Mtn section this year, I would say that the new section (i.e. bypassing the summit of Justus Mtn) is shorter. It's kind of a pity that the mountain is now bypassed because the south side had some nice views. However I certainly understand why the change was made because the north side trail was pretty badly eroded.

atdist.com has updated to the new 2018 mileage. It appears that I've hiked another 1.1 miles ... without getting out of my chair.

[QUOTE=Deacon;2182970]Anyone know where the additional trail mileage was added this year?

Is there anywhere we can go to see the mileage changes for each year?
When I began section hiking years ago, the trail was many miles less. With each addition, I always wonder if the extra miles were added to a section I have already completed or a section yet ahead...

What happens to last year's speed record holder? Since the trail is 1.8 miles longer than last year and the current record holder didn't do those miles will the first person to complete the trail this year in any amount of time hold the speed record at least for a little while?

In 1998 it was 2162.7 miles.

I can't help with where the specific trail changes were each year, but here is a list of what the official mileage was for each year this century:

    2001: 2168.1
    2002: 2168.8
    2003: 2172.6
    2004: 2172.6
    2005: 2174.9
    2006: 2174.5
    2007: 2174.0
    2008: 2176.2
    2009: 2178.3
    2010: 2179.1
    2011: 2181.0
    2012: 2184.2
    2013: 2185.9
    2014: 2185.3
    2015: 2189.2
    2016: 2189.1
    2017: 2189.8
    2018: 2190.9

So on average the trail has been increasing in official length by about 1.3 miles per year this century. The trail has increased close to 23 miles in that time and the Tennessee Eastman Hiking Club, responsible for the Spivey Gap to Damascus section, has added around 12 of those miles with their hard work relocating trail (often replacing eroded trail going straight up mountains with well built switchbacks).

In 2015 I was told that Bob Peoples and his crew were responsible for half of the mileage increase since 2000.

    Those switchbacks really add up!
